Demographics:
We travelled to this resort with a group of 6 adults who enjoy beach and pool lounging while having delicious drinks and food. This resort ticked all the boxes for our needs. We left our kids behind (wahoo!) but with a children's program and lots of activities, this resort would also be good for kids. However, I would possibly consider upgrading to a higher level at this resort (eg. Coral) to be able to use their splash pad if we had brought the kids.
The Area:
We did one excursion with snorkeling, swimming with rays and a booze cruise and learned that the Caribbean side of the island is far less wavy and therefore more conducive to motion-sickness. On the whole, I wouldn't venture too far off of a resort without a guide but we didn't feel unsafe at any time. Punta Cana really is a beautiful, scenic, top tier beach.
The Resort:
This resort is a shared facility between Waves Punta Cana and Waves Dominicana. They share all facilities and are mirror images of each other (ie. the two pools are actually for the two different resorts).
Rooms:
Clean and spacious, the rooms were a bit dated but that didn't bother us in the least. The beds were a bit hit and miss for our group but on the whole they weren't terrible.
Pools:
The pools were very clean and well-maintained. There was lots of entertainment poolside and 3 bars within easy reach. We all decided we preferred that they didn't have a swim-up bar since it kept the pools far cleaner. There were also two poolside restaurants that you could bring food back to your lounge chair from. Waiting in a short line for your drink while snacking on pizza became our norm.
There were also plenty of loungers available by the pool and by about 8 or 9am we rarely struggled to find 6 chairs together.
Food and Drinks:
The food was far better than we expected! The French restaurant tenderloin in particular was fantastic. Mexican was also great. Lots of variety at the buffet and food was plentiful and always available. Use the queso from the snack bar by the pool on the fries!
There are lots of convenient water stations with chilled and flavored water everywhere. There were also a ton of drink options with all your standard liquors available. They even had coffee machines at most of the main bars which meant espresso martinis and iced coffees (boozy or not) were everywhere!
Entertainment:
As stated, there was lots of poolside activities including dancing, bingo, pool games, etc. However, their nighttime shows, with the exception of an excellent fire show and beach party on Thursday, left a lot to be desired. We actually avoided the theatre shows because while they were generally at 9:30, they were painfully geared towards toddlers. Instead of watching the main show, we would go to the other side of the resort and watch a singer or listen to music and relax.
Beach:
The beach is the highlight of this resort! It's wide with lots of loungers. It was a bit wavy while we were there and gets deep a bit quickly, but for adults it was great. There are some vendors but if you politely say no thank you they will leave you alone (not sitting near an aisle helps as well). There's also parasailing($), banana boating($) and non-motorized watersports available.
